From Sebastian Beach to Buttertubs Marsh: Autumn Photography Adventures

After a slow summer, I finally picked up my camera again. With fall starting to show on Vancouver Island, I didn’t want to miss the chance to catch a sunset and those first hints of colour in the trees. Since my husband and I are heading on a trip soon, it felt like the perfect time to capture a few moments before we go and while I was feeling inspired. (Heads up: I may go quiet for a week or so while we’re away, but I’ll be back with lots to share.)

Sunset at Sebastian Beach, Lantzville

I chose Sebastian Beach for my sunset shoot, picked a night, and set out. At first, the sky glowed with soft pastels - calm and dreamy. Then, as I rounded the corner, the whole horizon suddenly lit up fiery orange. That’s the magic of a Vancouver Island sunset - it changes in an instant, and every minute feels completely different.

The beach was pretty busy at first, which made it harder to get a clean shot. But as the sun dropped lower, people started leaving, and I found a few good angles before the light disappeared. That’s the beauty of sunset photography - it all happens so fast, and every minute feels different.

Morning Walk at Buttertubs Marsh

A few mornings later, I went to Buttertubs Marsh in Nanaimo to look for fall colours. It was the first day after the autumn equinox, and the air was cool and crisp. The leaves weren’t fully changed yet, but there were hints of gold and orange starting to shine through and I’m pretty sure I captured some of that new fall magic!

I love this stage of fall on Vancouver Island; when the colours are just beginning, and the light feels fresh and clear. It’s a reminder that change is coming, and I’ll definitely head out again once we’re back from our trip to catch the full display of autumn colours.

Your Thoughts

I’ve shared a mix of photos here - some of my favourites and some that I know many of you will enjoy too. Which ones stand out to you most: the soft pastels, the bold orange skies, or the first touches of fall leaves?

Leave a comment and let me know! I always enjoy hearing which images connect most with people who love Vancouver Island nature photography as much as I do.

Until next time, here’s to sunsets, fresh air, and the beauty of fall. Watch for more blog posts and social media posts after {Canadian} Thanksgiving!
