Not what you’d expect.

My first blog post was a long time coming - and this second one? Well, you could probably say the same. Summer has a way of sending me into hibernation, but now I’m back with a new post, and it’s not quite what you’d expect.

If you’ve followed my work, you know I lean hard into colour, even if those are moody vibes. The lush greens of the forest floor, golden morning light, and the soft blues of coastal skies - that’s my visual language. But recently, something shifted.

Always intrigued by Pascale at Foto Rando, who’s often experimenting and nudging me to try new things. Her recent black & white work stopped me in my tracks. Without colour to lean on, black and white strips everything down to light, shadow, and form. Her experiments pushed me to see differently - in the best possible way. So I decided to give it a go - setting my camera to monochrome mode and heading into nature with fresh eyes.

And wow, you really do have to look differently.

Without colour to lean on, you start noticing other things - contrast, patterns, shapes, even emotion. I found myself paying more attention to the light, tilting my camera to catch stronger lines, and looking for shadows, repeating shapes, and those background details that often go unnoticed. It was a mindset shift - and a creative one. Slower, more intentional.

These black & white captures aren’t typical for me, but they feel honest. Like they’re showing a different side of the same story I’ve always told through nature - just with a different voice…and no colour.

Scroll through and let them speak for themselves. And if one stands out to you, I’d love to know.

Thanks for following along as I try new things,
Stephanie
